That’s not hyperbole. Just Wednesday the Football Writers Association of America named Wilson one of five finalists for the Bronco Nagurski Award as the nation’s top defensive player. Wilson, 6-foot-4 and 238 pounds, is long, athletic and fast. He leads the ACC in tackles (11. 2 per game) and even rushed for a first down on a designed fake punt against Louisville. As a former linebackers coach at Penn State and Vanderbilt, Pry has a keen appreciation for Wilson. “Most times you would say try and deceive him, ” Pry said of attempting to neutralize an elite inside linebacker. “You try and get his eyes in the wrong place to give you a chance to get the play started away from him. A void on the résumé: Tech has yet to win a one-score game. If the Hokies (5-5, 4-2 ACC) are to earn bowl eligibility Saturday against visiting N. State, that will likely need to change. At last check, Vegas favored Tech by 2½ points, which given the home-field consideration baked into the spread, means the Hokies and Wolfpack are essentially equals. Granted, Tech made a mockery of snug odds in its four ACC victories. Each had a spread of 1½-3 points, and the Hokies won those games, over Pitt, Wake Forest, Syracuse and Boston College, by 17, 17, 28 and 26 points. As prohibitive favorites in the season-opener versus Old Dominion, they prevailed by 19. Saturday feels different, and the primary reason is N.
